Must Tries – Salted vegetable duck soup, Karubi, Loola’s egg benedict

Loola’s is the latest addition to the Awfully Chocolate group, which includes eateries such as Everything with Fries, JooJoo and Moshi Bakes. The restaurant is named after the nickname of co-owner Lyn Lee’s daughter.

Located at the Esplanade, Loola's is an all-day dining concept that specialises in braised meats, from melt-in-the-mouth karubi to honey-glazed pork belly with crispy lotus root chips.

Many of their dishes are modern interpretations of traditional Asian recipes. The duck soup or ‘kiam chye arh’ ($9) is a good example. The duck is a twist on the Peranakan traditional dish ‘tek tim’, but this version has a thick and creamy texture made from egg emulsion. This delicious starter will zest up your palette with its unique flavours.

The Karubi ($32) is a highlight of the restaurant. It is a dish of braised beef short ribs served with grilled zucchini, butter baby carrots and caramelised shallots. The slow-cooked beef, though not particularly appetizing looking, is tender and simply melts in your mouth.

Loola’s also serves all-day breakfast such as French toast and soufflé omelette. The Loola’s egg benedict ($20) is a delightful interpretation with poached egg and Serrano ham served on a specially made bun. Do note that the prices are slightly high, and the restaurant is usually packed, especially nearer to show times so it is advisable to set aside at least an hour of dining time before your performance starts.
