After weeks of feasting on rich foods and snacking on festive goodies, it’s time to detox with a cup of cold and refreshing frozen yogurt. Best of all, fro-yo is virtually fat-free (though not sugar-free), so you can go ahead and indulge without feeling guilty!

Since our previous Tried & Tested feature on frozen yogurt, there have been more fro-yo brands available all over the island, which is testament that this frozen dessert is more than a fad. In 2010, there were at least five new players in the fro-yo market.

We check out five of these new fro-yo brands. Will they sink or swim in this increasingly saturated market?

Sour Sally EDITOR’S PICK!

435 Orchard Road, #B1-47 Wisma Atria

Opening hours: Daily: 10am-9.30pm

Price: from $3.50 (small) for original flavour

Rating: 4.5/5

If you like your frozen yogurt on the tart side, you’ll love Sour Sally. For Original Flavour, both the flavour profile and texture are very well balanced. The yogurt is tangy without being too sour, and smooth without being too creamy. In short, it’s exceedingly refreshing!

The flavoured yogurts (from $4.00) are also worth a try. Most creative is the melon-mint flavour, a dubious-sounding combo which turned out to be surprisingly likeable. The green tea flavour was delightfully perky without being overwhelmingly strong. Strawberry lovers will enjoy pinklicious, which is sweeter but deliciously fruity.

Of these five fro-yo brands, Sour Sally is the only one that doesn’t give us the freedom to mix and match an unlimited amount of toppings. However, they have a wide variety of premium-grade toppings to choose from. Chunky and freshly-cut, their fruit selection is outstanding.

Swirl Art

417 River Valley Road

1 Liang Seah Street, #01-13/14

Opening hours: Sun-Thu: 12pm-12am, Fri-Sat: 12pm-3am

Price: $3.00 per 100gms

Rating: 4/5

For those who prefer their fro-yo soft-served ice cream-style, Swirl Art’s original creamy yogurt is where you should place your money. Gorgeously smooth and milky, we like how it’s creamy without being overly rich. It’s slightly sweeter than Sour Sally’s, but retains enough tartness to make it addictively refreshingly.

The other flavours—there are seven to nine other flavors that are rotated—are mostly fruit-based. More unusual ones include taro and cappuccino. Our preference is still for the original creamy; the other flavours are too artificial-tasting for our liking.

Swirl Art is one of the pioneers of pay-by-weight self-service fro-yo, where you can mix and match any yogurt flavours and toppings. This gives you the freedom to get creative and come up with all kinds of wacky combinations!

Sogurt

617 Bukit Timah Road

101 Thomson Road, #B1-61 United Square

23 Serangoon Central, #04-17 nex Serangoon

Opening hours: Mon-Thu: 11am-10.30pm, Fri-Sun: 11am-11.30pm

Price: $3.00 per 100gms

Rating: 4/5

For fro-yo newbies, the mild flavours of Sogurt’s plain yogurt is a great introduction to the taste of frozen yogurt. It’s lighter than Swirl Art’s original creamy, but is sufficiently smooth. The sweet-and-sour flavours are muted but balanced.

In contrast, the other flavors are more memorable. Crowd-pleasers include peach-mango and lychee. They are subtle but distinct. Also, they are fruity without being overly sweet or artificial.

The toppings are the usual selection of fresh fruit, nuts and candy. Overall, we found the fro-yo selection at Sogurt very more-ish. Definitely worth a return trip!

Yigloo BEST VALUE

1 Harbourfront Walk, #B2-06A VivoCity

#B2-58 Plaza Singapura

Opening hours: Daily: 10am-10pm

Price: from $4.50 (small)

Rating: 3.5/5

Yigloo is the choice for those with a sweet tooth. Apart from original tart and blueberry, the other flavours taste very similar to flavoured soft-serve ice cream. This is a great alternative for those who want to indulge in frozen dessert without the guilt of full-fat ice cream!

Flavours are regularly rotated. Our favourite is the rich and bittersweet dark chocolate. Green tea, strawberry shortcake, and cookies & cream are also popular choices. Natural tart—available daily—is subtly tart with a tinge of sweetness. It goes well with the toppings, but somehow lacks distinctiveness.

A strong selling point of Yigloo is their free toppings and the freedom to mix any flavours you like. Their starting price may be slightly higher, but you can pile on as much toppings as you can manage (no refills)!

Glacious

23 Serangoon Central, #B2-57 nex

#01-41 Bukit Panjang Plaza

Opening hours: Daily: 11am-9.30pm

Price: $3.00 per 100gms

Rating: 2.5/5

The limited selection of flavours at Glacious is simply too sweet for our preference, including the original flavour. Although it’s more tangy than the fruit-based ones, the original flavor leaves a sweet, sticky after-taste in the mouth. The texture is also rather icy. We also didn’t enjoy the artificial-tasting fruit flavours like mango, strawberry and blueberry. Strictly for fro-yo fans with a super sweet tooth.
